Would you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about yourself and Queer Theology?
I’m Fr. Shannon TL Kearns (he/him/his pronouns). I’m a transgender man and the first openly trans man ordained to the Old Catholic priesthood. The Old Catholic church is a progressive Catholic group (not in communion with Rome) that ordains women, LGBTQ+ people, and people who are married/partnered/divorced. I’m a playwright and theologian and one of the co-founders of QueerTheology.com. QueerTheology.com is a resource for LGBTQ+ Christians and their straight/cisgender supporters. We take the view that coming to terms with and being okay with LGBTQ+ identity is a starting point and move forward from there. So we don’t spend a lot of time on the so-called “clobber passages” (the 7 or 8 verses most often used to condemn LGB folks) instead we spend time talking about how queerness and trans-ness is a gift to the church and the world and how it has something to teach all people about life and faith. We have a weekly lectionary podcast, tons of free articles, an online community, and we offer several courses a year on things like “Faithful Sexuality” and “Queering the Bible”.
