"What Child Is This?"
December 27, 2010

This is the reflection I shared in church yesterday. Each year on the Sunday after Christmas 3 carols are sung with a reflection shared before each carol. My carol was “What Child Is This?” It seemed to resonate with some folks in the congregation so I thought I would share it here as well. preached by Anarchist Reverend December 26, 2010 Plymouth Congregational Church When I was in college my mother became a foster parent. Through this experience our family…

over the past several weeks, a new friend and i have been having a conversation over email about churches having inclusion statements (or not) and if that’s important (or not) to us as queer people. we’ve also been talking about what role the church should play in standing up for queer people. she has started posting our conversations on her blog (with my permission) and i wanted to share them here as well. in the first post she sets up…

sorry for the silence. i hope to be back with more content soon. but i did want to come out of hiding to post the following. i’ve been saddened and horrified to hear of all of the youth suicides that have been happening lately. i wanted to hopefully do something to help and so i recorded my first ever vlog as part of the “it gets better” campaign. i’ve read some criticism of this campaign but i still feel that…

this video is a little long, but worth it. a funny (and sarcastic) look at questions not to ask a trans person featuring actress calpernia addams. there is a little bit of nsfw language so be forewarned. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjqsB1huDxg&hl=en_US&fs=1]

as an addendum to yesterday’s post: i wanted to give some further thoughts and resources on what it means to be a good trans ally. i said yesterday that most of the time i didn’t mind when people asked me questions about my transition, however there are some guidelines. while a friend might be willing to answer your questions, it’s not a good idea to ask personal questions of someone you just met. and while firsthand information is always the…

John 20: 19-20: When it was evening on the that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. John 20:24-29 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the…

John 20:11-16 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this,…

Throughout the gospel of Matthew we only see glimpses of Jesus’ mother. Unlike in Luke she is barely a footnote in the birth of Jesus. Here the text centers around Joseph. There is no mention of Jesus’ childhood in Matthew so the next glimpse we get of Mary the mother is in chapter 12 when Mary and Jesus’ brothers come to see Jesus. His response: “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?” It never mentions whether or not…

i’ve discovered many new things while writing through this passion narrative. it’s been really great to read these stories with fresh eyes. while doing that reading i came across the following passage and i have no idea what to make of it. i don’t remember it ever being taught in either my church or my classes. i plan on doing some more research, but i was wondering if other folks were familiar with this passage and what interpretations you had…
